On the way to Christmas | 2025 #1

December

The last month of the year has arrived. How do you look back? Sunday, November 30th was the first Sunday of Advent. What does that mean? Advent is a period of about four weeks that precedes Christmas. The word comes from adventus, Latin for “coming”.

In the Bible, the Book of God, much is written about the coming of the Lord Jesus. The coming of the Lord Jesus was foretold by prophets. The famous musical piece 'The Messiah' by G.F. Händel is about this. He quotes, among others, the prophet Isaiah, from Isaiah 7:14:

'Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with us.'

'See, a virgin shall conceive, and she shall bear a Son and His Name shall be called IMMANUEL.'

This prophecy was fulfilled hundreds of years later. We read the fulfillment in Matthew 1:23: 'Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and you shall call His Name Immanuel, which means, translated, God with us.' Read the announcement of the birth of Jesus to Joseph in Matthew 1:18-25.

Jesus was expected for about 4000 years, and He has come.

Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. About salvation. That means: happiness. It also means: rescue. God sent His Son Jesus to earth to save people and to make them truly happy.

At Christmas, Christians look back on Jesus' coming to earth. After His life, death, and resurrection from the dead, He went to heaven. He has promised to return. The four Sundays before Christmas are marked by expectation. Looking forward to the celebration of Christmas, to Jesus' coming, and to the day when He will return.
