The Bible may seem like a thick book. In reality, it is a collection of 66 books bound together. You could call it a handy library. The word Bible actually comes from this. The ancient Greek word ‘Biblia’ means books. The Bible is divided into two main parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Old Testament is about the time before the birth of Jesus Christ. He is the Son of God.
The Old Testament first describes how God created the heavens and the earth, and mankind. The great purpose of creation is that all of creation lives to the glory of God. That means: in love and perfect harmony with Him and with each other. But mankind broke those relationships and separated itself from God, the Source of life. The perfect creation was thus destroyed. Death and destruction entered the world (the fall into sin, which you can read about in the book of Genesis 3). But God promised restoration through Jesus Christ. This promise runs like a red thread throughout the Old Testament.
In the New Testament, the promise is fulfilled in the birth of Jesus Christ. The Son of God came into the world as a human being. The life, deeds, and words of Jesus on earth are also described in the New Testament. Through His suffering, death, and resurrection, He bridged the gap between God and people. Only through faith in Jesus Christ is our relationship with God restored. That is when you are truly happy!
The rest of the New Testament describes the development of the church in the first century after Christ. Several letters discuss the life of the Christian communities, and in these, the teachings of Jesus Christ are further explained. The last book of the Bible, Revelation, mainly describes the future. Jesus will return to earth. After His return, there will be a new heaven and a new earth, and everyone who follows Him will have a place there.
