Grinning pumpkin heads and spooky witches. At the end of October, many shop windows and neighborhoods transform into the set of a horror movie. Children dress up as skeletons or disguise themselves as the bloodied victim of a gruesome crime. For more and more people, Halloween is the ultimate fright fest.

But: is Halloween really as innocent as it seems? And where does this celebration actually come from?
